Ask Us -- Often Answered Questions

I am thinking about using the BEST software for a research project. Do I need a lap top with a color monitor to use BEST? The lap tops will be used by grad assistants in elementary classrooms to code ongoing behavior of children. Their data will be transferred to my DELL in my office for analysis, where I have a color monitor. Is their need for a color monitor for coding purposes or analysis/display purposes?

Sounds great on your interest in our products. You will not need a colo monitor for either collection or analysis as the programs function without. But for visual ease and presentation of data for immediate feedback, color helps (ie., multiple colors for graph lines when displaying multiple events on one graph, pie chart colors for different percentages of events, etc., etc.). I would also be hard pressed to think of a machine which has the basic requirements of the software (ie., Windows '95 or above and the required hard drive space 40+megs) which does not come with a color monitor??? But such a machine may exist...

If you are using very old laptops for coding (ie., the old 286, 386, or 486 series) we have a DOS-based system which is completely compatible with the new version which supports these older machines...but you must get in touch with us at Ed. Consulting, Inc. for these products.

We also have a new product which is designed to support data collection on the PocketPC(C) hardware for folks who want to simply code in the field and then analyze the data in a laboratory with a more capable desktop...

Soooo, lots of ways to go I guess...I would recommend, however, that if you ever want to use the BEST software for evaluation and immediate feedback purposes in the field that you install your field apps. on capable laptops with at least Windows '95, color monitors, and 40+ megs of diskspace.

We have a wide range of very user friendly and simple observation tools, that when coupled with our educational materials, will be of great help to your situation. What we typically recommend is the collection of data throughout certain periods of your child’s day. Once you have a good descriptive handle on the challenging activity, we then provide specific recommendations for you to follow while still collecting information on challenging activity changes to determine the effectiveness of what you are doing. We can send you summary and demonstration copies of our materials if you like. Simply provide a physical mailing address and we will act accordingly.

Indeed we do. What we provide may be used on all Windows based PCs and laptops. In addition, if you are using handheld Windows PC products, we can put the data entry programs on these machines as well. We also provide consultation to make sure that the type of data you wish to collect is specifically programmed into the software applications that we send you. If you would like a demonstration copy of our materials, please send us a physical address and we will send on introductory materials. Once you receive, we will follow up to develop a specific observational system that is tailored to your unique information needs.
